In the 1920s, Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule (1895–1945) after Japan won the First Sino-Japanese War. The local population faced heavy exploitation — especially farmers and miners — as Japan extracted resources to fuel its empire. Poverty, harsh labor conditions, and social inequality defined the era, which is the backdrop for Hill of No Return.
