Onimasa: A Japanese Godfather with English and Russian subtitles is a 1982 Japanese film directed by Hideo Gosha. Based on the novel of Tomiko Miyao. It was Japan’s submission to the 55th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee.

Epic saga of a Yakuza clan leader, Onimasa, and his adopted daughter, Hanako, in early 20th century Japan. The film navigates the complex interplay of power, loyalty, and tradition within the underworld and the turbulent changes in Japanese society. Onimasa, a figure both feared and revered, seeks to expand his influence amidst rival gang wars, political intrigue, and shifting economic landscapes. Hanako, spirited and defiant, grows under Onimasa’s tutelage, embodying the paradoxes of her environment: she is at once a symbol of purity and the heir to a legacy of violence.

Through her eyes, we witness the human dimensions of the Yakuza life—honor, familial bonds, and the relentless pursuit of personal destiny against the backdrop of fading samurai ideals. The narrative weaves together personal and political battles, exploring themes of power, identity, and the clash between traditional and modern values. “Onimasa: A Japanese Godfather” is a compelling portrait of a bygone era, marked by Hideo Gosha’s signature blend of dramatic storytelling and visual grandeur.
