Rubber’s Lover

A group of scientists believe psychic powers can be unlocked through extreme mental and physical suffering. After one test subject dies during a violent experiment, they capture a new victim and continue their brutal trials with mind-altering drugs and sensory torture, pushing everyone involved toward madness.

The film was shot on grainy 16mm and deliberately pushed toward harsh contrast and blown-out highlights, giving it that raw, almost toxic visual texture that matches its themes of sensory overload and psychological breakdown.

Director Shozin Fukui worked on the film after his cult cyberpunk debut 964 Pinocchio, and Rubber’s Lover continues the same underground experimental style, blending body horror, industrial sound design, and performance art rather than traditional narrative filmmaking.

The production belonged to Japan’s 1990s underground independent scene, where filmmakers often operated with extremely small budgets and total creative freedom, which is why the film embraces long chaotic sequences, improvised performances, and intentionally abrasive editing.

Over the years the film has gained a reputation as one of the most extreme Japanese experimental cyberpunk works of the decade, often discussed alongside other underground cult titles rather than mainstream horror releases.
